Tom Anderson Guitarworks
About
Tom Anderson Guitarworks is a boutique electric guitar builder regarded as one of the most respected names in the high-end custom market. Producing roughly 1,200 instruments a year, the company is known for exceptionally consistent build quality, playability, and tone, backed by manufacturing innovations most boutique shops don't attempt at scale.
History
Tom Anderson founded his namesake company in 1984 in Newbury Park, California, and quickly built a reputation for precision that set the shop apart from typical small-batch guitar builders. In 1988, Anderson became one of the first guitar makers to implement multi-purpose CNC machining, bringing industrial-grade consistency to boutique-level instruments. He later collaborated with Bob Taylor of Taylor Guitars to adapt ultraviolet-cured finishing technology for electric guitars — a technique subsequently adopted across the high-end acoustic world as well. In 2006, Anderson introduced the A-Wedgie neck joint, a compound-wedge bolt-on design that locks the neck in place with just two screws instead of the usual four, improving both tone transfer and ease of adjustment. The company's guitars, including the widely acclaimed Atom model, have earned a reputation among working musicians for combining innovative engineering with the hand-finishing touch of a true boutique shop.
